What Is File Sharing?
In its current use File Sharing means the practice of distributing or exchanging files (usually computer programs, music and other audio, movies and other video, on the Internet. The most common method of exchange is P2P (Peer-to-Peer) networks and programs.

What are the Most Common Peer-to-Peer Networks and Programs?

P2P Networks and programs allow users to specify files located on their computers that can be freely shared with other users. These P2P programs are most often used to share pirated software, games, music, videos and other copyrighted material over the Internet.

Risks of Using  P2P Networks and Programs

• Many people copy and share copyrighted material such as music and movies with friends and other. Sharing copyrighted material is illegal and punishable with fines, jail time, or both. Titles 17 and 18 of the U.S. Code provide criminal penalties for copyright infringement. Infringements can be punishable by up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
• By default, many P2P programs will share everything on your computer with everyone.
• Many of the shared files have been tainted with viruses, worms, adware, spyware, and other malware;  allowing the program creator to: 1) monitor everything you do on your computer, 2) use your computer without your knowledge, 3) alter your computer’s settings, 4) use your computer to spread viruses, worms, adware, spyware, and other malware, and perform illegal activities including trafficking in criminal pornography.
• As long as machine running the P2P software is turned on, the P2P software will continue to exchange files, unmonitored.

How to Protect You and Your Family from P2P
The answer is very simple: Do not use P2P file sharing networks or programs.  Use your firewall to prevent the use of file sharing networks and programs.  Regularly monitor your computer to verify that P2P is not being used.  Most importantly, teach the members of your families about the risks of using P2P file sharing.  The risks are listed above.
