Kids’ Top 100 Searches of 2009

• YouTube, Google, and Facebook top the list
• Sex and Porn round out the top 5
• Kids spend most of their time searching for music related topics (30%), then TV/movie related topics (12%).
• The most popular celebrity kids searched for was Michael Jackson. Taylor Swift came in second.
• Team Jacob won over Team Edward, with Taylor Lautner coming in at #80 and Robert Pattinson being nonexistent in the top 100.
• Other top celebs on kids’ list of searches include Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Lil Wayne, Megan Fox, Eminem, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Black Eyed Peas, Jonas Brothers, Rihanna, and Chris Brown.
• Kids are searching for shopping sites like eBay, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.

Top Searches of 2009 – Boys vs. Girls

• YouTube, Google, and Facebook show up in the top three of both boys’ and girls’ search terms.
• Boys’ #4 search term was Sex while girls’ #4 search term was Taylor Swift. Girls were still interested in Sex, though, with the term coming it at #5.
• Boys’ most popular celebrity search term was Michael Jackson.
• Boys’ top 25 search terms were mainly comprised of social networking sites, various websites, shopping sites, inappropriate terms, and games.
• Girls’ top 25 search terms were main comprised of social networking sites, as well as music and entertainment/celebrity terms.
• Both boys’ and girls’ most popular search terms were related to music, though it was higher in terms of percentages for girls at 42% compared to boys at 22%.
• Boys search more adult topics compared to girls (13% vs. 2%).

• Youtube, Facebook, and Google comprise the top 3 search terms for kids.
• Sex comes in at #4 for teens and tweens while porn comes in #4 for kids 7 and under.
• Taylor Swift was the top searched for term among teens. For tweens and kids 7 and under, it was Michael Jackson.
• Teens and tweens spend most of their search time online on music related subjects (34% and 27%).
• Kids under the age of seven spend most of their search time online on games (23%).
• Kids under the age of seven are conducting searches for P2P sites like Limewire and Mininova.

You may have already seen the pop-up add that looks something like this:

“Your friend Matt took a test and got a 135. Can you beat him?”

Darlena reports:

“You have to enter your cell phone number. Worse, the users couldn’t get it to work properly so they entered their number two more times. Bad Idea! When their phone bills arrived, it’s discovered they had subscribed to three different cell phone texting services, for a total of $44 a month!”

Facebook IQ quiz found to be scam

Ron Shulkin of Examiner.com has written an excellent article about how hackers will use information you post about yourself on social networks to steal your identity.

Here are a few highlights:

So the first thing I’ll do to steal your identity is find out everything I can about you. I can take a quiz, as apparently 34 million others did and with almost 200,000 fans, for “How Well Do You Know Me”? I’ll find out your birth date, where you were born, the names of your parents, your spouse, and your children. And I’ll find out their birthdates. I’ll find out your hobbies and your interests. I’ll see who all your friends are.

I’ll read “25 things you didn’t know about me”. I’ll know what sports you like, what your middle name is. I’ll know what your favorite stores are. I’ll figure out where you live by seeing where you shop. Your grammar school and your high school will be listed. It won’t be long until I find out the name of your first pet. Oh look, you used to have a space between your two front teeth!

Even without all this data I could probably figure out what your passwords are. Most people use the same password for every web site. Here’s the top ten according to PC Magazine:

How I’m going to use social networking to steal your identity!

There is another attack on Facebook users today. If you receive a message from a Facebook friend with links to Ligromind [dot] com or Killselfz [dot] com, delete the message immediately. Do not click on the links.

Pete Cashmore from Mashable is reporting that some Facebook users are receiving messages with links to goldbase.be and other .be websites with the subject line of “Look at This”.

DO NOT click the links to any of these sites:

goldbase.be
greenbuddy.be
silvertag.be
picoband.be

According to Mashable, if you receive any of these Facebook messages you should delete the message, clear your browser cookies, change your Facebook password and verify that your antivirus software is up to date and run a full system scan.

Also, help spread the word by warning your Facebook friends.

There is a new phishing scam is hitting Facebook users today. Facebook users receive a message from a friend that directs them to a site with an official looking Facebook login. When users login, the site captures the email and password, uploads malware to the computer, and then sends a similar message to all of the user’s friends.

The message has a subject line of “Hello” and a prompt to check out “areps.at”, “brunga.at” or other sites ending in “.at”.

Do NOT click on the link. Delete the message. If you have received the message from a friend, let them know that their Facebook account and computer have been compromised.

Practice safe computing.

Allowing [Quiz Name] access will let it pull your profile information, photos, your friends’ info, and other content that it requires to work.

By proceeding, you are allowing [Quiz Name] to access your information and you are agreeing to the Facebook Terms of Use in your use of [Quiz Name].

This is true of other Facebook applications as well.
