The new version 4 of Apple’s iOS (formerly called iPhone OS) contains many a new feature, but it also fixes 64 documented vulnerabilities, some of then (as is often the case with Apple security updates) quite old.

Many of these issues were recently fixed in iTunes and will likely be fixed in other Apple products before the last advisory is filed. In fact, since quite a few were in WebKit, some will be fixed in Google Chrome and other browsers as well.

For years OpenDNS has offered a secure, configurable, optimized DNS service that, according to the company, is used by about 20 million people – more than one percent of all Internet users. Today the company announced a new free service called FamilyShield Parental Controls specifically designed to block porn and other unwanted web sites. It’s easy to set up, requires no configuration, and works on all Internet-connected devices including game consoles, PCs (Windows-based or otherwise) and even phones connecting via WiFi.

Pornographic advertising on Facebook; Why is Facebook becoming NSFW or kids?

… The minimum age to open a Facebook account is 13 but anyone of any age can visit a Facebook page. My wife and I supervise our young daughters when they use the Internet and I have the maximum filters turned on for Google searches, but why was I stuck last night explaining to my 9 year-old the answer to her question, “What is that man doing to that lady and why are they naked, Daddy?” while she was looking at her ballet friend’s Facebook photos?

Google added a new feature to Gmail which will detect suspicious activity in your account and notify you when an intruder has attempted to login to your account.

If Google detects a possible intrusion, it will display the following warning in your inbox that your account was accessed from a specific location.

By clicking on the “Details” link next to the [warning] message, you’ll see the last account activity window that you’re used to, along with the most recent access points.

If you think your account has been compromised, you can change your password from the same window. Or, if you know it was legitimate access (e.g. you were traveling, your husband/wife who accesses the account was also traveling, etc.), you can click “Dismiss” to remove the message.
